Tiny Changes
Every year July 28th is World Nature Conservation Day, and this year the focus this year was on forests. We’re all acutely aware of the threat to our forests from wildfires and have seen the devastation they have wrought all over the world and close to home in the United States. National Parks like Saguaro, Olympic, Sequoia and Yellowstone have all been affected. If you’ve ever been lucky enough to visit these places, you understand their awe-inspiring beauty and the potential for loss.
Gift wrap seems a distant and marginal subject in this context, but there is a connection. We started Rapt Gift Wrap after years of using wrapping paper for all our gifts. One day we woke up to the enormous waste involved. The waste of money, of time, and most especially, of paper and trees. We knew there had to be a better, more sustainable and eco-friendly solution. So we started Rapt to replace single-use, disposable wrapping paper.
Our culture is changing, if slowly. But changing nonetheless. Every day, people are waking up to waste and finding small solutions that can make a difference. There are so many sustainable options out there: bars of shampoo instead of plastic bottles; reusable face cloths instead of disposable ones; wool dryer balls instead of throw-away dryer sheets, to name a few. Small actions taken collectively matter: bringing your own bags when you shop, refilling a water bottle, using storage containers instead of ziplock bags. These things also save you money. We see more and more people recycling plastic (Did you know you can recycle contact lens cases?) conserving water, switching to glass, buying electric vehicles, using a bike for local errands. All these things are great. Let’s keep up the good work!
