for the athlete
A sight for sore muscles
Despite the name, the Theragun is not a weapon, but a great massage tool for sore muscles and general aches and pains. It comes in several sizes and colors - including a travel size called the mini - and really hits the spot
Soak it all in
If you have a bathtub perhaps you already know about the magic of Epsom salts. I’m a huge fan of both - a bath and salts - a great combination after a hard workout or a long day when your muscles, body and brain are tired. Epsom salts contain magnesium which gets absorbed by the skin during a bath. It can help reduce inflammation and relieve muscle soreness. I always get the lavender one for extra relaxation!
Just keep swimming
For those who enjoy listening to tunes, books or the news while swimming, these are the headphones for you. They are pricey, but people swear by them and find they make swimming more enjoyable.
Have mat, will travel
Have you ever tried to do some stretching or yoga on a towel in a hotel room? It moves all over the place. More and more hotels have yoga mats, but I have been traveling with one for years. It’s thin, lightweight and takes up less space than a sweater. Mine is from Gaiam but Manducka is also a good brand.
What’s cookin’?
A friend gave me this cookbook when we were doing races together years ago, and I love so many of the recipes in it (kale radicchio salad with miso lemon vinaigrette, chocolate cookies made with teff flour, sweet potato cookies, etc) Shalane Flanagan partnered with her friend and Olympic marathoner, Elyse Kopecky, to write a cookbook geared toward runners: Run Fast, Eat Slow. They believed a balanced diet rich in good fats is essential for your bones, heart, brain, hormones and more. Get it at your local bookstore!
