A Classic Icon
The Academy Awards were not quite the same this year, but nothing about this year has been quite the same. Inspired by the Oscars and in honor of an actress we admire, we have created this accent which reminds us of Audrey Hepburn in the incredible dress and hat, designed by Cecil Beaton, that she wore to the Ascot races in My Fair Lady.
While early in life she trained and dreamed of being a dancer, Audrey Hepburn became an icon of film and fashion. She brought a fresh face and life to Hollywood at a time when Doris Day was the girl-next-door and Marylin Monroe was the blonde bombshell. Audrey’s princess ingenue in Roman Holiday was captivating and her performance won her an Oscar in 1954.
Her status as a fashion icon was born from her collaboration and 40-year friendship with the French designer Hubert de Givenchy, who first designed her clothes for Willy Wilder’s Sabrina. The creations were stunning. As were those to follow. Who can forget the elegant, iconic black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s? Or the stylish, classic outfits in the comedy-caper How to Steal a Million? Her movies bear re-watching.
And lastly, we also remember Audrey Hepburn later in her life when she could have simply put her feet up but instead put her feet to work travelling the world as the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and turning our eyes from her beautiful face to what she was seeing in some of the poorest communities in the world. She herself had known hunger and deprivation during the war in Europe, and she remembered the help she had received from UNICEF. She paid it forward and must have been a great comfort to all those she touched in her work around the globe. We know she touched us deeply. We salute Audrey Hepburn, the actress and the humanitarian!
